I'm a teacher who still loves teaching. I'm a man who loves kids and dogs, and tries to inject humor into most areas of life.
People who mistreat or look down upon others bother me, as do wealthy people who think that wealth equals wisdom. I was a radical conservative until my senior year in engineering school, when JFK was assassinated. He inspired me to join the Peace Corps and go to Ecuador to build schools.
In Ecuador I realized that I didn't like engineering, but I did like teaching. In 1968 I went back into the Peace Corps and taught science and math in a Chinese school in Borneo (part of Malaysia). It was there that I really learned to speak Chinese. Since then I've worked in this country, and one or two others, with poor and underprivileged people. I'm not as handsome as RR was, but I followed his lead and switched my allegiance (from the right to the left instead of from the left to the right). My grandmother approved of this greatly.
I'm someone who has recently rediscovered the wonders of tennis, and who still tries to jog four times a week. I like living on Lake Sacandaga, where I can swim everyday in the warmer weather and kayak almost anytime that the lake isn't frozen. And I'm someone with an enormous joy of life who is looking for my counterpart. As Harry Belafonte said, in his famous concert at Carnegie Hall 100 years ago, "I know you're out there".
